Ciaran Cannon, Minister of State in the Department of Education and Skills, recently launched a community education position paper in Athlone.

The paper, titled ‘Community education: enhancing learning, fostering empowerment, contributing to civic society’ was developed by the Community Education Facilitators Association (CEFA).

The paper presents CEFA’s views on the way forward for community education. CEFA consists of personnel employed by local VECs who work with community groups promoting and delivering informal education opportunities within a broad range of community settings.
The event was attended by community education facilitators from across the nation, including Galway. Among the groups attending from County Galway were Clifden Home and Garden Project and Mná le Chéile, a quilting group from Inis Oirr.
In his address to the gathering, Minister Cannon referred to the potential of community education to raise people’s capacities for participation on both a social and economic level. He said recent figures indicate that there are well over 50,000 participants availing of community education through the community education programme funded by his department annually.
